The Special Economic Zone of Mariel, Cuba (ZED) Tech Center will create a new and innovative workplace. Conceptually morphing light industrial work space with a high tech contemporary office space, the ZED Tech Center aims to create a holistically unified experience for all employees. By reducing the footprint of all programs to an efficient proportion, the office stacks vertically upon the flat laying light industrial space creating a singular building. The overall composition of the ZED Tech Center is highly informed by the climatic conditions of Cuba. The building mass splits and joins to create wind tunnels for wind turbines, includes solar photovoltaic cell arrays as well as other building integrated photovoltaics, and sheds water to surrounding onsite rain gardens and water retention ponds for public use. Because of the climate informed design, the program offers unique collaborative spaces, ample daylight, amazing vistas, and efficient workspaces for all employees. The ZED Tech Center would be a beacon for the entire ZED district and an icon for the progress in Cuba.
