JGMA is developing a prototype for children and youth with disabilities in Latin America. The inspiration for the design of the Exploration Institute is reflected in the organization’s mission. Simply put, the facility’s design is intended to celebrate human potential and create participation and inclusion. This one-of-kind facility will be specifically designed for people with varying abilities and when complete, this project will become the benchmark and inspiration for similar facilities worldwide.
The Exploration Institute is a unique facility that brings several different programs together to provide a truly innovative approach to providing community services. The individual buildings are bound together with a light tensile fabric canopy, blurring the distinction between indoor and outdoor, allowing activity to flow freely between both spaces. The forms of the buildings surround and transform the interstitial spaces into courtyards to infuse as much nature into the facility as possible. Creating the most comfortable and functional surroundings stimulates healing, education, and personal growth, making the institute an ideal haven for everyone in the community.
