Residential Tower

Chicago, IL, United States

JGMA was hired by the John Buck Company to design a residential apartment tower that would represent the antithesis of the glut of apartment towers currently under construction or recently opened within the city of Chicago. This tower is directed specifically to the high-tech audience moving to the city due to the recent relocation of high-tech businesses to Chicago. The tower amongst many things provides the high-tech audience with the opportunity of living in a capacity that is commensurate with their atypical lifestyle.

For the design, we took living in an apartment and began to morph it into a hospitality lifestyle. The components within an apartment can move, shift, or be transformed from a pure living moment to a pure working or entertaining environment. The flexible nature of the apartments acknowledges the complexities of the high-rise living lifestyle. The transforming interiors are carried out onto the façade where balconies project in an atypical fashion.

On the exterior of the tower, the balconies stripe what is a regular box shaped tower form. The striping occurs in two zones: flat, tinted glazing and clear glazing with balconies and secondary skin. The secondary skin is comprised of stainless-steel tubes mounted to the face of each balcony slab edge. The skin provides a unique enclosure to the units while simultaneously allowing select views of the city. The movement of the tubes stripes the tower on an angle to acknowledge the presence of the adjacent church by diminishing the imposing scale of the tower. This striping gives a unique identity to the tower, setting it apart from the residential towers being produced in the city while also providing the building users with an unparalleled living experience in the city of Chicago.
